Fourth person dies after A49 crashes
Thursday 15th September 2011, 10:30AM BST.
A fourth person injured on Shropshire’s A49 in the space of 24 hours has died, it was confirmed today, as calls were made for management of the road to be handed over to local authorities to improve safety.
An elderly man driving a car involved in a crash near Bayston Hill on Tuesday afternoon died yesterday. A 93-year-old passenger, believed to be his wife, also died in the four-car crash.
In a separate crash on the A49 between Marshbrook and Wistanstow at about 9.45am yesterday, the male driver of a van and female driver of a car died after their vehicles collided. Neither has been named by police.
Councillor Bob Welch, mayor of Church Stretton, said town and parish councils along the route were considering making a ‘detrunking’ proposal. It would mean the road would no longer be classified as a trunk road and would be managed by local authorities rather than the Highways Agency.
But Highways Agency officials have insisted there are no plans to change the road’s status.
Meanwhile, a woman whose car collided with a tree on the A458 between Cound and Cressage, near Shrewsbury, at 8.30am today has been airlifted to hospital.
