Cyclist killed in Shropshire border collision
Thursday 15th September 2011, 2:00PM BST.
A pensioner has been killed in a collision on the Shropshire/north Wales border.
The 71-year-old cyclist was involved in an accident with a truck between Chirk Bank and Chirk village.
The accident happened on the road know locally as The Trap, near to the Seventh Heaven premises. The cyclist was named locally as Brian Parker, from Chirk.
Tributes were made to him as a “lovely chap” who was often seen riding his bicycle on roads in the area.
Emergency services were called to the tragedy just after 4pm on Tuesday.
Constable Mark Lightfoot said: “The driver of the pick-up truck has been arrested and bailed pending further inquiries.”
He is urging witnesses to call the Roads Policing Unit on 0845 6071002 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.
Barrie Roberts at Chirk’s Cadbury factory, where Mr Parker worked as an engineering contractor, said: “We are all stunned and shocked by the news. He was a lovely man – a very likeable guy.”
A postmortem examination is due to be held today.
