Oswestry to have Christmas ice rink

Oswestry will have an ice rink at this year’s Christmas Live festive extravaganza.

Last night’s Oswestry Town Council market and car parks committee agreed the rink should be installed in Festival Square for one day during the Christmas Live celebrations in December.

Members were told the hire cost would be more than £3,000 for two days and about £1,650 for one day and income from the Festival Square car park would be lost.

The council heard the live music stage would not be set up and that would make way for the rink. Music would be provided at other locations.

Councillor Steve Haworth said he was concerned about the loss of car parking income and added people might spend their money on having a go on the ice rink instead of in shops.

But Councillor Martin Bennett said Christmas Live had other attractions which people already paid for, including a funfair.

Who’s dopey idea was this? Didn’t a councillor from Shrewsbury suggest something like this a few years ago?

I don’t want to sound like a Scrooge but wouldn’t the money have been better spent on something that more people could enjoy – rather than an ice rink which will only be used by a small percentage of people?
