Oswestry youth workers are cutting under-age drinking
Wednesday 14th September 2011, 12:57PM BST.
A pilot project in which youth workers walk the streets of Oswestry on Saturday nights to combat under-age drinking and anti-social behaviour is proving a success, it was claimed today.
Outreach workers from Oswestry Youth Cafe (OYC), in Oswald Road, are piloting a project which sees them take to the streets in the town from 6pm until 10pm every Saturday night.
They approach teenagers to advise them about the dangers of under-age drinking and explain the effects anti-social behaviour has on the communities they live in. The teenagers are also invited to the cafe for a free evening meal.
Liz Jones, cafe co-ordinator, said the scheme was proving a success.
Ian Wilson, OYC’s project leader, said: “OYC is ideally placed to deliver this important work in Oswestry and the project offers a real chance to address underage drinking and anti-social behaviour in the area.”
Shropshire councillor Martin Bennett, said: “This project will help us in that aim, and address the issues which are so often raised with councillors about alcohol related behaviour in and around Oswestry.”
Shropshire councillor Steve Charmley, added: “The effects on the Oswestry community of alcohol-related anti-social behaviour and that of the health and well-being of young people cannot be ignored.”
