Two rescued from Shrewsbury sandwich shop fire

Two people, including a 16-year-old boy, were rescued from a Shrewsbury sandwich shop after a fire broke out causing smoke to billow through the property.

The fire, involving a chip pan range, broke out in the Sandwich Cellar in Wyle Cop at about 10pm yesterday.

Firefighters rescued the teenager and a 30-year-old man from the second floor of the property after the fire broke out on the ground floor. Three people, including the two who were rescued, were treated at the scene by paramedics for the effects of smoke inhalation.

Sandwich Cellar co-owner Mustafa Mercankaya was in the shop at the time of the fire, which he said started unexpectedly while the shop was open for business.

He said: “There was a fire in the chip machine, with some smoke in there. I called for a fire engine. It was oil burning in the machine.”

Mr Mercankaya said one of his friends and his 16-year-old son Sinan were rescued by firefighters from the second floor of the building as they stood by an open window to escape the effects of the smoke.

“The fire service had to go upstairs to get them down. My friend had come to help me with the fire and he had brought a fire extinguisher with him,” he said.

Mr Mercankaya’s wife Rose said she hoped the business would be able to reopen in the near future.

A spokesman for West Midlands Ambulance Service said: “We treated three people at the scene and there was smoke damage to the building.”
