Work begins on Oswestry indoor market revamp
Monday 12th September 2011, 12:19PM BST.
Work has begun on a major revamp of Oswestry’s indoor market, with more than £100,000 being spent to bring the 1960s building up to date.
Oswestry Town Council is still negotiating with the national MyDeco design company over materials that it may contribute as part of a competition that the Powis Hall market building won.
But councillors agreed to press ahead with the improvements.
The main change will be the installation of a lift to take stallholders and shoppers up to the first floor balcony stalls in the building on the Guildhall.
In the past those with mobility problems had to struggle with a steep ramp if they could not use the stairs.
Market manager David Clough said: “There will be improved lighting throughout the building and cosmetic improvements,” he said.
“The work is estimated to take 16 weeks with the market continuing to open throughout the project.”
