Community groups across Shropshire were celebrating today after receiving a share of a £539,000 lottery cash pot.
The cash came from the Big Lottery Fund’s Awards for All small grants programme for the West Midlands. The funding has gone to initiatives which are aimed at improving the well-being of people of all ages through such activities as dance, football, healthy eating and singing.
Among the groups celebrating today was Craven Arms Community Food which received £4,031, which will go towards increasing storage space at the monthly farmers’ market.
The market is held on the first Saturday of every month at the Shropshire Hills Discovery Centre, between 9am and 1pm.
David Gibbon, chairman of Craven Arms Community Food, said: “We have also been awarded £2,500 from the local joint committee for the unit, which we are tremendously grateful for.”
St Mary’s Bucknell Parochial Church Council has been awarded £1,740 for improved facilities.
Elsewhere, the Oswestry Project Group received £8,290 which will be used to deliver a training programme for mental health service users.
Oswestry town councillor Betty Gull said: “It is super news and I know the work the group does benefits the service users.”
Gnosall and District Community First Responder Group received £10,000 towards funding to replace an emergency response car with a four-wheel drive vehicle.
Shawbury-based Deafsmart UK received £10,000 to fund activities and services for people with hearing impairments.

A grant of £9,860 went to Telford-based Towers Above to help mental health service users and St Patrick’s Catholic Primary School in Wellington got £10,000 for an outdoor classroom.
