Monday 12th September 2011, 4:00PM BST.
ONE MAN was killed and three other people injured in a four-vehicle smash on Shropshire’s M54 today.
The crash brought rush-hour traffic to a standstill on the motorway at 8.30am.
The man, who has not been named, was found on the carriageway between junction three at Shifnal and junction four at Telford.
West Midlands Ambulance Service spokeswoman Suzie Fothergill said he suffered crush injuries as a result of the crash and died at the scene.
Another man, aged in his 40s, believed to be travelling in one of the vans, suffered head and leg injuries and was airlifted to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Birmingham.
A lorry driver, aged in his 50s, was treated at the scene for a back injury before being taken to the Princess Royal Hospital, Telford, while a fourth person suffered minor injuries.
The Central Motorway Police Group said one lane of the eastbound carriageway is open, but the westbound route remains closed.
Miss Fothergill said: “On arrival at the scene, crews found two lorries and two vans that had been involved in a road traffic collision.
“The first casualty, a man, was found out of his vehicle and had suffered serious crush injuries.
“Crews immediately assessed the man, but unfortunately nothing could be done to save him.”
A total of three ambulances, two ambulance officers, an incident support officer and the Warwickshire and Northamptonshire Air Ambulance were dispatched to the scene.
