Market Drayton honour for troops a step closer
Friday 9th September 2011, 11:57AM BST.
Plans to recognise the efforts of a Shropshire-based regiment whose soldiers recently returned from Afghanistan have moved a step closer.
Market Drayton Town Council has agreed to set a budget of at least £5,000 for a ceremony next year to award troops from the 1st Battalion Royal Irish Regiment with the freedom of the town.
About 600 members of the regiment, based at Clive Barracks in Tern Hill, were deployed in Afghanistan between October 2010 and April 2011.
Three died and 13 were seriously injured during the deployment, with all soldiers being recognised on their return to the UK with welcome home parades in Market Drayton and Shrewsbury.
The freedom of the town ceremony is due to take place in Market Drayton in April and discussions are ongoing between town councillors and Royal Irish Regiment officers about the nature of the event.
The decision was approved by councillors during a meeting of Market Drayton Town Council in April.
