Plans have been unveiled to build 76 homes near a sports complex in Market Drayton. Town councillors gave their backing in principle for plans for the site off Greenfields Lane last night.

A formal application is expected now to be submitted to Shropshire Council, which will make the final decision.

If approved, the plans would see 52 detached houses and 24 semi-detached homes built, along with a new sports pitch, cycle route and car parking spaces.

The proposed site is near the Greenfields sports complex run by Market Drayton Sports Association.

In a letter to Shropshire Council planning officers, agents acting for Danbank Developments Ltd, the firm behind the proposed scheme, said the land was ‘well-suited’ for the development.

The letter said: “The development proposes a comprehensive, mixed-use plan, incorporating residential use, open space, car parking and a sports pitch. The land is well-related to established residential development.

“The provision of significant open space on site, and a sports pitch, will offset the loss of land identified by (Shropshire) Council for potential recreational use.”

Danbank Developments Ltd was established in the 1950s by Lewis Price who ran the company until his death when he was succeeded by his son, Andrew.

“It is considered that the land is well-suited for the uses proposed and is capable of being delivered in the short term,” the letter said.
