Parents of youngsters at an Oswestry primary school earmarked for closure say they need reassurances about their children’s future.

The head of Maesbury Primary School, Rosemary Finney, said the school was still pursuing academy status which would give it independence from Shropshire Council.

She said parents had given tremendous support to the school which celebrates its 90th anniversary this year.

But she said: “We understand that Shropshire Council is looking at reviewing the catchment area of Kinnerley School to take in Maesbury.”

“That would have the knock-on effect on where the children would be expected to go to secondary school,” Mrs Finney said.

“It could be that a family could find themselves with one child at the Marches School and another at Corbet.

“I would ask Shropshire Council to move quickly to reassure parents.”

Good luck on the Academy status Maesbury!

Reassurances form this council are not worth anything, nor are their assurances that they fairly consulted, this council had pre-determined ideas and that is what has happened.
This council are also very good at changing catchment areas when it suits their argument. All these school closure decisions are because they want to lift the education standards in the county which are stalling because every Shropshire child matters, except those affected by the closures they do not matter at all, it’s all for the greater good?

Good luck with the fight! These small primary schools are an important part of the community, and often have an historic significance as well. It is important to think of the impact on children too, as often these smaller schools can provide a much more inclusive education to all – something the government is pushing for!
