Letter: Shrewsbury car parking could learn from other towns
Friday 9th September 2011, 9:37AM BST.
I have just spent a few days in the North-East and observed the following.
Gateshead’s Metro Centre had free parking. In Whitley Bay and Tynemouth, all parking was charged at 1p per minute with a minimum charge of 5p and a maximum stay of four hours costing £2.40.
In Newcastle the multi-storey car parks were £1 per hour up to four hours, or £5 for up to eight hours.
In all of the car parks there was no charge in the evenings.
In Durham they welcomed your bus pass on the park and ride services.
Once in the centre you had a free minibus up to the cathedral, as it is like our Wyle Cop.
If other councils can do it, why is Shropshire Council not doing the same and welcoming visitors to the town?

Not car parking charges yet again. Boring. This will now start a huge debate with all the same comments and moans as numerous previous threads.

I actually think it’s a good idea to show the councils what they can do to help increase foot fall in the town. The more bodies, the more ppl spending.
The more ppl spending the more shops will thrive, then more shops will open, and increase the amount of ppl coming into town again.
In Lancaster there were 30 mins and 60min parking. It was 50pence or £1 respectively. This increased the amount of ppl popping into town for a few items. Rather than them either not bothering, buying it online, or going to a supermarket.
Shrewsbury needs more short stay parking spaces.
The Sunday parking charges need to be decreased, or made first hour free.
The council is making Shrewsbury into a ghost town on a Sunday.
The more ppl who complain, hopefully the more the county council will pay attention.

I can’t see the Shrewsbury problem. I’m in St Ives where the council has sold far more weekly parking passes than they have spaces. People are a little bit cross
I live in the town centre and for many years had no parking. It was never a problem. It’s the price you pay for living in a beautiful old town.
Yep, let’s stop this negativity.
