Shropshire MPs submit lowest ever expenses claims
Thursday 8th September 2011, 10:34PM BST.
MPs across Shropshire submitted their lowest ever claims for expenses in April and May this year, according to figures released today. The six regional MPs claimed £2,060.95 – or £33.79 per day.
However, the new figures do not show the true cost of maintaining democracy for residents in Shropshire because claims to run constituency offices and employ workers in Parliament do not feature.
The Independent Parliamentary Standards Authority now releases figures every two months. The system was introduced after the MPs’ expenses scandal.
The frequency of accounting periods means some periods do not include details of office expenses, admin, subsistence, accommodation and other matters.
During the present accounting period, the region’s six MPs only submitted claims for congestion charging in London, using their own cars, taxis and rail transport.
The MP submitting the highest claim was Glyn Davies, who requested reimbursement on 74 occasions for travelling allowances and received £826.50. The Montgomeryshire Tory received expenses for using his own car, paying congestion fees and booking taxis.
Daniel Kawczynski, Conservative for Shrewsbury and Atcham, claimed the next most with 17 claims totalling £490.40. His claims were for using his own car, parking and travelling via rail. He had the single most expensive car journey at £160, and the cheapest rail journey at £1.
Philip Dunne, Tory for Ludlow, claimed £399.50, with his three claims all being made for rail transport. David Wright, Telford’s Labour MP, received seven payments totalling £288.80 with his claims being made for using his own car and congestion charges. Mark Pritchard, The Wrekin’s Tory MP, made just one claim for £55.75 for a rail journey.
No figures were available for Owen Paterson, the Tory MP for North Shropshire.
The latest figures were revealed just 24 hours after a new MPs’ expenses scandal erupted. A report by Bureau of Investigative Journalism revealed MPs were paying family members nearly £3 million of public money, prompting calls for further reforms.

Why should they have out-of-pocket expenses paid back after all a lot of people traveling to and from work have to pay for their own fuel or rail/bus fare. Would they get that back if presented to their employer? Think not. So its a perk for an MP. They should cut back and contribute to the debt like the rest of us eh? No 2nd homes neither.

Well done MPs! It is a shame that the SCC Councillors do not follow the example.

Amazing what a few de-selections and prison sentences can achieve in focusing their honesty and integrity!!
