Driver airlifted after Oswestry crash
Thursday 8th September 2011, 1:01PM BST.
A man in his 50s was airlifted to hospital after his car smashed into a tree in Oswestry town centre.
Paramedics were called after the driver’s blue estate car crashed on Oswald Road at about 1.55pm yesterday.
An air ambulance from RAF Cosford landed in a nearby park to airlift the injured driver, who is believed to have fallen ill at the wheel, to University Hospital of North Staffordshire.
He suffered leg and minor chest injuries.
Police cordoned off part of Oswald Road, diverting cars through the adjacent coach park.
Buses had to pull up in the coach park while cars were unable to access the nearby Aldi supermarket.
Inspector Helen Thomas, from West Mercia Police, said: “A single man was in a car which crashed into a tree.
“It appears he may have become ill at the wheel while driving.
“He’s well in hospital and has received treatment.”
A West Midlands Ambulance Service spokeswoman added: “No-one else was injured in this incident.”
