Oswestry museum work could start in weeks
Wednesday 7th September 2011, 1:57PM BST.
Work on Oswestry’s new museum could begin within weeks – and it could be open to visitors by February next year.
Bosses say the programme of exhibitions for the museum, which will be at the town’s Guildhall, will be discussed at a meeting next month.
Oswestry Town Council has agreed in principle that the steering group for the museum can house the museum in the civic headquarters, The Guildhall, free of charge for the next five years.
Town clerk David Preston said that significant progress had been made in recent weeks.
He said: “The museum is already registered with the Association of Independent Museums.
“The project group has made significant progress in a very short period of time and a further meeting is scheduled for October 6 that will complete the business plan and determine the exhibition programme for the first 12 months of the museum,” added Mr Preston.
“Ideally access to the site can be given to the group as soon as possible after October 6.”
Councillor Betty Gull said that the momentum for the museum was very exciting.
“The open day was extremely interesting,” she said.

initially it is planned to open the museum 3 days a week, Wednesday, friday and Saturday to coincide with the market days, the 3 days a week opening is only the initial plan, once more volunteers join the group the plan is to open 7 days a week with extended opening hours during the main tourist season and also to support other events in the town such as at the Attfield Theatre, food markets, Oswestry show days etc. disabled access is available due to the Guildhall already having a lift with access to the former magistrates court rooms which is where the museum will be located.

I welcome the idea of a museum for oswestry, but will the open times reflect the tourist seasons like most museum do, plus will there be access for the disabled.

Fantastic news. About time a town as large and historically important as Oswestry had a museum. Maybe now we won’t have to travel huge distances to see objects from the area.

thank you for the support, we aim to make the museum a focal point for both tourists and local residents, to publicise the fantastic amount and variety of heritage attractions we have in the area and to provide a home for some local collections which do not currently have anywhere to display their items.
the events taking part in the Heritage Open Days events this weekend (Sept 8 – 11) serves to demonstrate the amount of local heritage interest in the area and how local heritage groups working together can attract visitors to Oswestry and the surrounding area
