Market Drayton woman jailed over £32,500 Post Office theft
Tuesday 6th September 2011, 12:35PM BST.
Mr Neil Fryman, prosecuting, said the offence had a distressing impact on store sub-postmaster Andrew Morris, causing him to have asthma attacks and his wife to suffer from depression.
An impact statement said Mr Morris suffered a loss of income while the premises closed and customers were forced to go elsewhere.
Mr Paul Smith, for Davitt, said his client had difficult personal circumstances at home and tried to make herself feel better.
Judge Roger Dutton said Davitt had taken advantage of the trust Mr Morris had shown her by letting her be in charge of the accounting when he was not there.
He said: “You have brought shame on your family and yourself.”
The Post Office launched its investigation on May 19, 2009 after “out of the ordinary” transactions were noticed on its accounting system.
Woore Post Office reopened on June 10, 2009, after a new counter assistant was employed to replace Davitt who had worked there for three and a half years.
A Post Office spokesman said: “Post Office Limited believes that all sub-postmasters hold a unique position of trust.
“The overwhelming majority of people who work in our branch network are professional, honest and provide the highest standards of service possible and so it is always disappointing when that trust is breached.
“Post Office Ltd takes a zero tolerance policy to the rare incidents of dishonesty.
“However, when incidents do occur we always seek to take action.”
