Conservatives warned over missed Shropshire Council meetings

Conservative chiefs have warned party members they are missing too many Shropshire Council meetings.

In a private e-mail to party members Councillor Martin Bennett, secretary of the ruling Conservative group, warned members they were giving opponents ‘a stick to beat us with’ by ‘going Awol’.

He said it was embarrassing at a meeting when the opposition members outnumbered the administration.

Councillor Bennett wrote in the August 29 message, which has since been leaked to the Shropshire Star: “If you are unable to attend a committee meeting (regulatory, scrutiny, working group) then you must find a substitute and advise the chair of the meeting and committee services.

“It has been noted that recently there have been a number of people going Awol and this has in some cases given a perfect opportunity to the opposition groups to push their agenda and gives them a stick to beat us with in claiming that we cannot be bothered to do the work we are elected to do.

“It is embarrassing to go to a meeting and find that the opposition members outnumber the administration – as well as dangerous.”

Mr Bennett told any committee members to organise replacements if they were regularly unable to attend meetings.

The e-mail was anonymously sent to former Liberal Democrats councillor Peter Phillips, who represented the Bishop’s Castle area on Shropshire Council until announcing his resignation last month.

Mr Phillips said: “It’s pretty staggering when you realise there is usually only two or three opposition members on these panels and up to nine Tories.”

Mr Phillips said the person who had forwarded him the e-mail had withheld their name.

However Shropshire Council leader Keith Barrow today said he had looked back through attendance records since the e-mail was leaked and had found pleasing results.

Mr Barrow said: “The e-mail shows we continue to look at attendance to make sure everybody turns up to every meeting.

“But when we look at the attendance figures they are pretty good across all the parties.

“The attendance right across the board really isn’t particularly bad. This e-mail was to gee up the members to make sure we get 100 per cent attendance, which we will always strive towards.”

I hope they will loose a percentage of their generous allowances for not attending the meetings

they are about 90% of all councillors so if they are outnumbered in a meeting by the dozen or so lib-labs that is VERY embarrasing

All is not well in the state of Denmark. Could the Cabinet and Leader be losing the support of the rank and file?

As long as those in Oswestry get the services they need…..has anyone noticed that lots of things have been cut in Shrewsbury recently but those same services in Oswestry seem to be OK. Do I smell a barrow?

So they enjoy the allowances and expenses but don’t actually do what is expected of them. What a corrupt, hypocritical bunch of wastrels!. I’m going to put a FOI request in to find out who the culprits are. Their constituents need to know who’s not pulling their weight. I would suggest that this conservative administration has some deep seated rot and it comes form the top down. Probably too busy out huntin’, shootin. lunchin’ and filling in their expenses forms!.

Well it has just been the holiday season!
It’s not like being an employee where you are told you can’t have leave. When you are an elected member you get your allowances whether you turn up or not.
You can be lightly admonished for poor attendance and can expect strong support and guidance from a legal employee of the council if you do push the boundaries of what is acceptable behaviour, personal interests etc etc; so all in all, it is a cosy situation really, isn’t it.

They must be seriously rattled ….and who leaked this? Must have been a Tory. Just shows that there are some decent Tories somewhere who don’t like what’s going on.

The email covered the previous six week, when like the rest of the population, many councillors went on holiday and substitutes are encouraged.
Comments suggesting that most councillors are not hard working are wide of the mark and most of the Conservative group’s attendance record compares very favourably when compared to that of former councillor Phillips!

If I didn’t turn up for work I would be disciplined and lose a bonus. Payments related to performance should be introduced.

it certainly shows again what everyone with an understanding of the current regime at shropshire council knows – the leadership is very poor – no inspriation, no leading by example, its us and them, no good for going forwards together
