Grow your own boost

Resourceful residents in Shropshire are living the good life as they turn their back on supermarket groceries for home grown fruit and vegetables.

Staff at The Original Factory Shop, in High Street, Bridgnorth, say they have seen an increase of 165 per cent this summer on sales of their ‘grow your own’ range compared to last year.

Green fingered gardeners are putting their time and money into seeds, greenhouses, salad blends and summer flowering bulbs, leading the store to invest in up to 80 per cent more stock for next year.

Store manager Julie Price said: “We began to see an increase in sales of our Grow Your Own ranges back in 2009.

“At the time, people were becoming more savvy about where food has come from and what’s in it. Growing your own food seemed to be a low cost way of gaining that knowledge and eating organic food.”
