Good start for Shrewsbury street festival

Saturday 3rd September 2011, 11:30AM BST.

The Shrewsbury International Street Theatre Festival began in style with visitors to the town centre being treated to a whole host of unusual and exciting performances.

Organisers said it had been a highly successful start to the event yesterday, with the sun shining down as the event got under way from about 11am.

Spokesman Neville Street said early indications showed attendance figures could be up on last year.

“It has been fantastic – the stage areas have been absolutely packed so far,” he said. “The weather has been superb – not too hot but sunny, warm and just perfect. I must say it has been very busy for the Friday.

“Today we are hoping for even bigger crowds.”

The annual festival is expected to attract in the region of 30,000 visitors to the town centre, with acts performing at four different stages until tomorrow.
