Gobowen woman conned out of pension money
Friday 2nd September 2011, 11:20AM BST.
An elderly woman had £55 of her pension money stolen after a teenager tric-ked his way into her house. Police are appealing for witnesses to come forward after the burglary.
It happened at the 84-year-old’s home in Gobowen on Wednesday.
The youth, thought to be aged 15 or 16, spoke to the woman who was gardening at her home in St Martins Road in the afternoon.
He said he was a student from Oswestry College and wanted to do some gardening to earn money.
Police spokesman Richard Ewels said: “The woman explained she did not need any gardening doing and, although the youth was insistent, he eventually left.
“Later in the day, she noticed that £55 of her pension money was missing from the living room. It’s thought the youth sneaked into the house unnoticed.
“Police have carried out house to house inquiries nearby and are appealing for information.”
The youth was white, slim with dark curly hair and was wearing dark jeans and a long-sleeved grey top with a dark grey stripe down the centre.
It follows the theft of cash and a Rolex watch from a pensioner in Queen’s Head near Oswestry, on Tuesday.
Two distraction burglars claimed a window had been damaged and they needed to come inside to check it.
In July of cash and watches were stolen by con artists from the home of an elderly Gobowen man.
Shropshire Councillor David Lloyd, who represents Gobowen residents, said: “Elderly people must remain vigilant.”
