Kinnerley youngsters get BMX track
Wednesday 31st August 2011, 4:06PM BST.
Youngsters are celebrating the official opening of a Shropshire village’s £10,000 BMX track after carrying out 18 months of fundraising.
Young people joined forces with Kinnerley parish councillors to get the track created after an initial request nearly six years ago.
Yesterday a number of officials and residents arrived in the village to see it opened by Priscilla Hilton-Jones, from the Hilton Jones Charitable Trust.
Instructors from Wrekin Riders BMX Club then took to the slopes to teach youngsters riding skills.
A call was made for the track or another sort of facility in the Kinnerley Parish Plan in 2005 and a request for a track renewed last year.
Young residents then started to organise fundraising events and managed to raise £2,000. Additional funding was given by Shropshire Council’s Local Joint Committee, the Hilton Jones Charitable Trust and the lottery cash.
Kate Sanderson, parish clerk, said: “The success and support given to the local fundraising efforts is a testament to the support that this project has enjoyed.
“The feedback from the young people of the village is excellent. They are very pleased with it.”
Consultation took place with the local police team, Shropshire Council and RoSPA. All funding was in place in June and the parish council gave BMX track builders Clark & Kent the go-ahead.
