Bridgnorth considers fire effect gel to get rid of pigeon problem
Wednesday 31st August 2011, 8:00PM BST.
Pigeons causing a nuisance in Bridgnorth town centre could be driven out by a gel that tricks them into thinking their favourite landing spots are on fire.
The birds have become a problem in the town centre, especially around the town hall and Pos-tern Gate where they leave a mess on buildings and pose a health risk.
Now the town council is to consider an approach from a national company offering to apply a non-toxic gel to the buildings.
The council’s property and grounds committee will discuss the problem and decide a way forward at its meeting on Tuesday.
A report to the meeting says of the bird repellent: “To the human eye it looks like a gel but to the birds, which include pigeons, magpies and gulls, it looks like a fire. This encourages them not to land or nest in the areas. Pigeons are becoming a massive problem for towns, such as Bridgnorth and other areas. The excrement can cause a lot of health issues in humans, such as lung disease.
“The company is offering to get rid of any existing nests and apply the product to ledges where the birds make home meaning that there will be no cleaning up after them every week. The product is guaranteed for a minimum of two years.”
Former mayor Val Gill said: “They certainly make a mess on the pavement around there. When it rains and it is wet it can be quite slippery.”
Mrs Gill said previous attempts to solve the problem had been to put wire on the buildings to deter the birds from roosting.

Problem with moving the birds from the town centre is that residents on near by streets such as St Mary’s St are landed with the problem . I am beginning to get an increased problem with the pigeon mess already and this is since the introduction of the wire if the gel is more efficient then our problem will increase.

This product has not been proven to work. Removing nests of any bird is illegal under the Wildlife & Countryside Act 1981, they need to consider WHY the pigeons are breeding so much (over-feeding would be the main culprit followed by available breeding spaces such as derelict buildings and railway bridges etc). Until these things are taken into consideration all that will be achieved is that the birds will be moved on from one place to another. Waste of time. This product really does work, Horsham council have been suffering with this pigeon problem for the last 20 years, the product was installed 6 months ago and now there is not one pigeon in sight where the problem was. Its also been used in Korea for the last 4-5 years and its been a great success there. Pigeons are classed as vermin so i think you will find from building where they are a problem they can be removed. All the info about the product is on http://www.birdsaway.co.uk Its better to use this then having someone come in and shoot them as that is also allowed!
