Two construction workers injured in the Abraham Darby Academy collapse have been released from hospital.

Five workers were taken to hospital when a steel canopy collapsed and crashed 40ft to the ground at the new £35 million Telford academy.

Jane Mason, spokeswoman for developers Kier Group, said the two workers left hospital yesterday while others were likely to be allowed to go home today or tomorrow.

Ironbridge Road in Madeley, which had been closed, is now open.

Councillor Paul Watling, Telford & Wrekin Council’s cabinet member for Children and Young People, said it was still too early to say whether Thursday’s collapse would affect the opening of the academy in January.

Leader of Telford & Wrekin Council, Councillor Kuldip Sahota said: “I was at the school tightening the last bolt during a topping out ceremony and I was under the canopy with some children burying time capsules.

“I’m glad there are no serious injuries.”
