Letter: iPads v more seats for visitors to the Quarry
Thursday 25th August 2011, 6:01AM BST.
Letter: Just prior to our premier tourist attraction, the Shrewsbury Flower Show, I took my wife in a wheelchair and my 93-year-old mother-in-law to see The Quarry.
We strolled along Victoria Quay and the Sabrina boat had a wonderful display of hanging baskets.
Having just missed the Sabrina boat, we decided to wait for the next one and looked for the availability of somewhere to sit.
I was amazed that we were unable to locate any seats between Welsh Bridge and Porthill Bridge on the Victoria Avenue side of the river.
On the Frankwell side of the river there were six seats with no-one sitting on them. It was brought to my attention that some of these seats were kindly donated by ex-Frankwell residents.
Does the council not have any money for seats along our premier tourist location? It has money to spend £12,500 on iPads for councillors, but no seats for the elderly.
I would advise councillors to visit Chester where there is an abundance of seats along their river location.
Wake up Shrewsbury.

I’m surprised Colin as I always think that Shrewsbury is the only place in the country where you can always feel like you are sitting in remembrance gardens to a Crematorium as so many of the benches are dedicated to those dearly departed or
‘Shropshire born and Bred’ who have passed on.
In the Dingle this is especially so and the benches look untidy and cumbersome.
If they are so desperate to spend some money the Town Council should consider integrated seating in the Dingle snaking around which would look amaking and provide far more seats as there would be no unnecessary clunky arm rests each end.
We have some fantastic metal forging artists in Shropshire who I’m sure could design comfortable, practical and beautifully designed seating that would not detract from the Dingle like the present jumble of boring benches does.
