Shropshire soldiers off to support Afghanistan troops
Monday 22nd August 2011, 7:00PM BST.
Four soldiers from Shropshire are among a new wave of Territorial Army troops heading to Afghanistan.
Geoff Trueman, Allan Bromley, Nathan Bedson and Peter Berry, all of Telford, form part of the 159 Supply Regiment team which left yesterday.
The regiment is sending 19 of its members to Camp Bastion to provide support to frontline troops by moving, storing, maintaining and issuing every item required by the Army.
Troops will first attend a three-month training camp in Germany, before starting a six-month tour in Afghanistan.
Sergeant Bromley, 32, said: “It’s my first operational tour and I’m looking forward to the challenge and experience as it’s one of the reasons we sign the paperwork, to get out there in real operations.”
He added: “My job will be to control the containers full of the military hardware coming in and out of Camp Bastion.”
Mr Bromley, whose day job is as a food company manager in Market Drayton, was leaving behind wife Louise and their sons Joshua, 12, Oliver, six, and Archie, two.
He said: “I think my family are anxious and slightly worried but Louise is strong and she has our two eldest sons to be the men of the house.
“The communications over there are pretty good and we can go on the internet and talk a bit.”
Lance Corporal Trueman, 39, from Hollinswood in Telford, is leaving behind his wife Kerri and two children, Hayden, aged 10, and Leah, 15.
He said: “I’ve been in the full-time Army for about three years while working at Renault in Stafford Park.
“I’ve only ever been abroad before on training camps so it feels like a step up,” he added.
“The wife’s worried and parents are too, but I’m quite chilled and relaxed about it. ”
The regiment, which has its headquarters at Canley in Coventry, has a sub-unit Telford.
