M6 collision causes traffic delays
Monday 22nd August 2011, 11:29AM BST.
Traffic chaos hit the M6 in the West Midlands today with motorists facing hour-long delays in six-mile tailbacks following a crash.
Further problems were caused when a lorry broke down on the northbound carriageway at junction five, Castle Bromwich, blocking two lanes of the motorway.
Three lanes of the northbound M6 carriageway were closed after a tanker and a car collided at about 7am between junctions six and seven at Great Barr.
About 60 litres of fuel spilled from the lorry and spread 300 yards down the carriageway.
A car driver was arrested at the scene by police for failing to supply a specimen of breath. He has now been released on police bail.
The northbound carriageway between the two junctions was closed while the spillage was cleared.
Motorists were left queuing from junction six to junction nine at Wednesbury whilst emergency services tried to clear up the fuel.
On the southbound carriageway there was slow moving traffic for up to 15 miles back to junction 11a near Cannock whilst motorists slowed to have a look at the spillage on the other side of the road.
