Designer honour for murdered colleague
Monday 22nd August 2011, 11:29AM BST.
A 24-year-old trainee teacher who was murdered by her father has had a dress made in her memory by fashion retailer Monsoon, where she used to work.
Friends and colleagues of Amrit Kaur Ubhi helped design the “Amrit” dress.
It is available only in teal, which was the Telford woman’s favourite colour.
Miss Ubhi was murdered by her father Gurmeet Singh Ubhi at their family home in Leegomery in September. He was jailed for life and ordered to serve at least 15 years last February.
Tracy Scott, a sales assistant who worked with Miss Ubhi at Monsoon in Telford, said the dress was a beautiful way to remember her friend.
She said: “Monsoon has designed this dress and called it Amrit and it has just gone on sale at every store across the country.
“The designers have been working on it for about six months with the help of input from Amrit’s friends and we are really happy with it.”
One of the Amrit dresses, which retail for £130, was auctioned on Saturday night at a ball at Lilleshall National Sports Centre in memory of Miss Ubhi.
Mrs Scott said they raised more than the £1,000 they had hoped for, which will now be shared between the store’s own charity and a nursery in Telford where Miss Ubhi was on a work placement.
Donations to the charitable fund can also be made online at the organiser’s website .
