Saturday 20th August 2011, 11:29AM BST.

A 34-year-old man has admitted being in possession of a home-made hand grenade and other firearms and ammunition.

Philip Edward Jones, of Olive Cottages, Frankwell, Shrewsbury, pleaded guilty to six charges under the firearms regulations when he appeared at Stafford Crown Court yesterday.

Judge Robin Onions ordered reports. At yesterday’s hearing Jones admitted possession of an improvised explosive device which was not in his control for any lawful objective.

Jones also admitted two offences of manufacturing prohibited weapons.

He also pleaded guilty to possession of five rounds of home-made ammunition and possession of 31 rounds of nine millimetre ammunition. And Jones admitted attempting to convert an imitation firearm – a GAP eight millimetre blank firing pistol – into a weapon.

Sentence was adjourned until September 16 and Jones remains in custody.
