Fire at Shrewsbury chip shop
Saturday 20th August 2011, 11:29AM BST.
Firefighters were called to a fish and chip shop in Shrewsbury after a fryer caught fire, filling the building with black smoke.
The Cod Father in Belle Vue Road caught fire just after 5.25pm yesterday with customers, staff, neighbours and drinkers at The Grove pub next door having to be evacuated from the premises.
Police closed the road in both directions for more than an hour as fire crews fought the flames, which at one point spread to the flat above the shop.
Diane Hughes, landlady at The Grove, said: “It was quite a big fire. I think the fryer went up and smoke was blowing right up the front of the building.
“We had to ask everyone who was in the pub to go out into the garden at the back away from the smoke and flames.”
Display menus and light fittings inside the shop were destroyed by the flames.
The road was reopened at 6.30pm, but a fire investigation officer stayed at the scene with the owner of the shop.
Watch manager Chris White said: “It’s been a fire in a cooking range which has spread to the extraction system.
“It’s caused significant superficial damage to the kitchen and store, due to the thick black smoke which was issuing from the room.
“People were inside when it caught fire but got out quickly and now we will have a fire investigator look at what caused the cooker to catch fire.” No-one was hurt in the blaze.
