Shropshire patients faced with long waits
Friday 19th August 2011, 4:47PM BST.
Just two-thirds of patients at Shropshire’s two main hospitals are being seen within 18 weeks of being referred for treatment by their GP, new figures reveal.
Statistics released by the Department of Health show only 67 per cent of patients at the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital and Telford’s Princess Royal were seen within target times.
It comes as national figures show a 61 per cent increase in people enduring long waits for treatment.
Vicky Morris, chief nurse and director of quality and safety at Shrewsbury and Telford Hospital NHS Trust, said: “We are working hard with PCTs and GPs to reduce waiting times as quickly as possible, focusing on people at greatest clinical need and those who have been waiting longest.”

This doesn’t surprise me after my recent experience. And the main problem is appalling record keeping, a lack of administrative housekeeping, outdated systems and dreadful customer service.
Following my referral, letters were sent to a previous address of mine. Then, when I was contacted, I was sent to the wrong site despite my querying and re-checking. So I had to go to the back of the queue and wait for another appointment.
This time, and despite clarifying and re-checking with the appointment reception, I was sent to the wrong part of the hospital and did not have a test that I needed prior to my appointment with the consultant which delayed me and the consultant’s appointment list for the rest of the day.
I genuinely believe that a lot of the problems in the NHS are due to blatant inefficiency. If the NHS was a private business, it would have closed down years ago.
