Farmer Derek keen on happy glampers

It’s a trend made famous by the likes of actress Sienna Miller and model Kate Moss but visitors to Shropshire could soon enjoy a touch of their own luxury-style camping in the county’s picturesque countryside.
For Derek Harper, who is the owner of a family business that is also a working farm, is extending his self-catering cottage operation in order to cater for the growing list of people wanting to go glamping.
Glamping – which is any form of luxury camping – was made popular by stars on the hit ITV2 show The Only Way is Essex after cast members went on such a holiday together this year.
Mr Harper has now submitted plans to Shropshire Council for Morrells Wood Farm in Leighton, near Shrewsbury, to allow some of its land to be used for camping in yurts – a traditional tent-like structure used in central Asia – and shepherds’ huts – mobile timber cabins.
They will boast full-size beds, furniture and even stoves so guests can sit back and relax in ultimate comfort. But Mr Harper, said he does not think that bringing in the new facilities will result in any dramatic change to the company’s current clientele.
“It is just a continuation of the business really. We have been going for about 10 years now and it is a family business,” he said.
“They would be our yurts all ready to go into and we would have two or three. It’s more just an extension of what we have got at the moment.
“We have met a lot of lovely people from all over the country and all over the world and want to continue bringing business to the area.
“I don’t think this will bring in a different audience, as we are targeting the same sort of people.”
Mr Harper said the yurts and the shepherd huts were designed to offer campers something of a home from home experience.
The planning support statement put forward by Madeleys Chartered Surveyors on behalf of Mr Harper’s application says: “A more advanced standard of camping contained within a yurt and a shepherd hut would be more in keeping with the existing developments on this holding and could be run alongside the existing business as additional bookable accommodation.”
Shropshire Council is to rule on whether the plans can go ahead next month.
