A mother who nursed her daughter through two life-threatening bouts of leukaemia will enjoy a weekend at V Festival, courtesy of the Shropshire Star.

Julie Anderson-Edwards, from Oakworth Close, in Hadley, Telford, cared for her daughter Lucy through ill health. Lucy, who is 20, was among more than 100 people who entered a competition to scoop tickets for this year’s musical bonanza.

The event takes place at Weston Park, near Shifnal, on Saturday and Sunday.

Lucy said she wanted to show her mother Julie how much she loves her.

Many entrants for tickets in the Shropshire Star’s competition simply wanted to enjoy a good weekend.

A small number told of having been ripped off by ticket scammers; others wanted to celebrate a significant date or anniversary and some told us how they had overcome adversity.

Lucy said: “I can’t believe I’ve won. My mother is a single parent who has been my principal carer. She has stayed by my side, every day and every night.

Independence

“I’m only 20 and I only have a part-time job, so I wouldn’t be able to afford to buy tickets.

“Because I was so poorly throughout my teen years, I feel as though I’m catching up on the time that I’ve missed. After six years fighting ill health, I’m regaining my independence and wanting to catch up on my teenage years.”

Lucy’s difficulties began when she was 14 when she was diagnosed with leuk-aemia. She underwent months of intensive treatment at Birmingham Children’s Hospital.

Lucy had to work hard to catch up at school and after securing impressive GCSE results secured a place at Walford College, Baschurch, to study a National Diploma in animal management.

She said: “Unfortunately, on August 22, 2007, two years to the day from my first diagnosis, I relapsed. I was much more poorly. I underwent more chemotherapy and a bone marrow transplant.”

She hopes to have fun watching Eminem and Arctic Monkeys, courtesy of the Shropshire Star, as well as hob-nobbing back stage. She said: “I’m looking forward to having the best weekend of my life with my mother.”
