A Shropshire restaurant has been named one of the best in the UK by a respected food guide.
The Good Food Guide 2012 ranked Mr Underhill’s, at Ludlow, as being among the cream of the crop.
It is the only Shropshire restaurant to win a place in the top 50, coming in at 39th. Today Chris and Judy Bradley, owners of Mr Underhill’s, said they were thrilled. They opened their restaurant at the end of the 1990s.
The husband-and-wife team, whose restaurant is at Dinham Weir, has won numerous awards in recent years.
Mr Bradley said the couple had opened the restaurant after visiting Ludlow and finding the venue by chance.
He said: “Ludlow is an exceptional location and we are fortunate that we have access to amazing producers and suppliers. We are very pleased to be included in the Good Food Guide 2012 as being the best restaurant in our region.”
Mrs Bradley added: “We are never complacent and we never rest on our laurels. Of course, we are thrilled, but this is really recognition for the entire team. We have a hard-working group of people here and this is something for everyone to enjoy.”
Mr Underhill’s differs from many restaurants in that it offers a no-choice daily “market menu”, which features dishes created by Mr Bradley based on the best produce available.
The guide says that across Shropshire and the Midlands, the standard of restaurants has continued to rise and there are 19 new entries in the 2012 edition. In total there are 100 restaurants from the Midlands featured in The Good Food Guide 2012.
Elizabeth Carter, consultant editor of The Good Food Guide, said: “Dining in the Midlands is flourishing. An impressive number of new entries in The Good Food Guide 2012 sit alongside some great fine-dining experiences and seasoned favourites, all contributing to a thriving culinary scene in the region.”
- The Good Food Guide 2012 is published on September 8, priced £16.99. The Midlands region includes Lincolnshire, Northamptonshire, Leicestershire and Rutland, Derbyshire, Nottinghamshire, Staffordshire, Warwickshire, West Midlands, Worcestershire, Herefordshire and Shropshire.
