Appeal for shoppers to boost trade after protests
Tuesday 16th August 2011, 7:00PM BST.
Shoppers are being urged to turn out in their hundreds in Wellington on Saturday to show their support to traders who were forced to shut because of two protests in the town.
Paul Kalinauckas, a newly appointed member of Telford & Wrekin’s Co-operative Commission, set up to advise the borough council, wants more people to visit the town centre on Saturday than attended the protests last weekend.
A protest by the English Defence League, attended by about 350 people, and a counter “unity” demonstration, attended by more than 300 people, saw businesses shut up shop amid fears there could be trouble.
Mr Kalinauckas has started campaigns on Twitter and Facebook to encourage people to visit the town.
