Shrewsbury Flower Show visitor figures up
Monday 15th August 2011, 11:29AM BST.
Initial indications show that visitor numbers at this year’s Shrewsbury Flower Show were up on last year, organisers of the event today said.
Brian Goodwin, chairman of the Shropshire Horticultural Society, said that it had been a “very successful” show.
“We were fortunate with the weather obviously. Gate entrances were up, there is no doubt about that,” he said.
“It is difficult to tell precisely how we did because we sell so much online and through agencies. But it was up by 3,000 on the gate on Friday and on Saturday. I’m not sure.
“We had about 35,000 through the gate on Friday and it’s always the lower attendance.”
Mr Goodwin said last year’s attendance was about 45,000 and they were hoping to top the 50,000 mark.
Mr Goodwin added that there had been plenty of highlights over the two days.
“From my point of view, I’m very happy and it was a lovely event. I thought the highlight was the presentation of the Webb medal for bravery to the two young soldiers from Telford. The society gave them lifetime membership as well, which was good,” he said.
The Captain Webb medals were presented on Friday to Warrant Officer Class 2 Kim Hughes, 31, and Corporal Ricky Furgusson, 26, by officials from the Shropshire Society of St George in London. They were given a standing ovation as they collected the honours for their bravery in the line of duty.

Lee, that’s exactly what my wife and her friend said.
They told me: “£24 a ticket? And there wasn’t anything worth seeing, this year! Unless they buck their ideas up, we will not be going next year!”
They are very keen gardeners and haven’t missed it for years.

A wonderful weekend!

I thought the show was not as good this year. No static displays from any of our three armed forces, not even the climbing tower for the kids. The knights on horse back we ok but not great and yet again we have a motorcycle display team. Is it not time that the organisers that out of the box a little, they said they made a profit so why not give us something to really shout about?
What happened to all the trade stands along the bottom of the quarry, the only thing along there were burgewr vans selling a cheese burger for £4.80!
The show needs reviving. At the moment it’s just the fireworks that are really keeping it going and getting people talking about it…

Yes, pretty good.

Yep the fireworks were fantastic but that was it. The whole show needs a complete shake up.
The ring events were boring and revolve around the same age old formula.
Who employs the crass entertainers that were meant to be funny? I’ve never witnessed such childish nonsense.
Definately not worth £24 and it will be some time before I am tempted to go again

When I saw the prices, I thought that the only visitors would be Licenced Insolvency Practitioners!
Agreed, the format is stale. How about a fly past like in the good old days?
Splendid fireworks. We observed the pyrotechnical feast from the garden of the Boat House. Delicious beer!

You could end up in debt going to the flower show and paying the prices in the quarry…
At least the sponsers gave it their all in their VIP area. I did notice the champagne going down well, they were behaving like pompous morons if you ask me. They are the ones who could not care less about the flower show and what goes on, as long as their company name gets advertised…

The arena massed bands, pipes and drums at the end were good but they could have done more, I enjoyed it anyway. Is it a Flower show with extras?

We were warned not to bother going by friends already there because it wasn’t worth the entrance fee.

sounds as if I didn’t miss much, we used to go reguarly bu £24 each is alot of money plus extortionate food prices. I’ve thought for years that the Show needed a major re-think. Its been the same tired formula for too long – are the SHS capable of having innovative ideas?
