Letter: New supermarket won’t help Newport shops
Saturday 13th August 2011, 7:54AM BST.
Letter: A supermarket with more than 400 parking spaces is not just going to sell food and encourage people to go into Newport for the rest of their purchases.
Don’t treat the electorate as idiots – no way will Newport High Street prosper from this development.
Even travel agents, estate agents and solicitors operate out of some large supermarkets these days.
During High Court action by Hark Apollo (owners of Telford Town Centre) against the proposed move by Asda across the road to the Malinslee House site, it was stated that if Asda moved out of the town centre it would have a detrimental effect on the existing shops.
Come clean, Telford & Wrekin Council.
This is political. You don’t like what has been achieved in Newport by the previous administration so you are out to destroy it and pocket millions in the process – no doubt to pay out more unnecessary redundancies and for highly-paid jobs.
Admit it, you have one agenda – to overturn all the good the Conservatives have done regardless of the harm you will cause to the electorate.
The co-operative council seems to have fallen at the first hurdle with its idea of getting people involved.
Despite widespread objections from both Newport Town Council and residents, planning approval was given to develop the Broomfield Road site in Newport.
I am not hopeful that the electorate’s opinions will be taken into account on any planning proposals.

With respect newport is more of a large village than town , the shops are to be honest sparse and down market and the supply of required goods is limited.
