English Defence League protest in Wellington – regular updates
Saturday 13th August 2011, 12:43PM BST.
Protesters from the English Defence League were today gathering in Wellington – despite a Home Office ban preventing them from marching through the town.
Shops are boarded up throughout the town centre, and dozens of police officers are on duty for the protest, which is due to take place in Church Street. About 1,000 people are expected.
A counter ‘unity’ demonstration is being held at the Nailor’s Row car park to coincide with the EDL protest.

He calls Mr Jahan a “brave man who lost his son and two of his friends who were run over by some murdering scumbags. He lost them in the most horrific circumstances. It’s a tragic, terrible incident and our hearts go out to their families. Whatever our beliefs, that man has lost his son. It’s absolutely horrific. He lost his son and he still called for calm. What a great man and a great Muslim.”
Speaking about the riots in London, he said: “Today, most importantly, we are going to show them how to do it. If you have a problem with your country, you must go down the right channels. We are going to use democracy.

Have just driven past Morrisons in Wellington and have seen groups of yobs leaving with the store with arms full of alcohol! Shame on Morrisons for even staying open this afternoon let alone seemilngly to be encouraging alcohol sales on such an explosive day. This will surely only add to the pressures the police and community are facing.
What a bigoted view!
How do you know these “yobs” are not hardworking folk planning a friendly party at home this afternoon? You don’t – you know nothing about these people, you’ve stereotyped them, pandering to the media furore. Its prejudice and hypocritical, no better than those with racist opinions. Shame on you.

Great response, David.

Excellent response David ….talk about give a dog a bad name.
In fact i think it’s people like Claire who cause a lot of the problems in this country labeling people as “YOBS”…
Advice: Don’t tar everyone with the same brush!

Hardworking folk who then threw bottles at some Asians who were on Morrisons forecourt? I think not.
I was in Wellington yesterday, were you?

I was in Wellington on Saturday. The only ‘bother’ I saw was the police ..sorry ‘Robocops’..telling this middle aged ex-soldier he could’nt leave Church St….because we were all to be marched to the coaches….to North Rd???…

Get a life, have you not bought beer yourself why are they yob’s,Plenty of us were there for a peaceful protest. You have been scare mungered by the police and there were no need to bored your town up the way you did.
i got 2 crates of beer from morrisons for my bbq on my birthday. does that make me a yob? i would say the yobs were the locals who were fighting police or the 40 odd asian lads who through a brick at an edl coach window on morrisons carpark
Report abuse
Well said Claire and well predicted. Where did the trouble start? Oh yes, Morrisons, where the idiots had easy access to alcohol. It doesn’t take a genius to work it out.
Well done Morrison’s for aiding and abetting the trouble.
Knew it would still happen.

Theresa May has only the power to stop the planned march. It is perfectly legal to take part in a protest – however much we may not agree with the opinion. Legislating to ban this protest would have dire consequences for free speech.
As long as individuals keep within the law, there is no harm in this protest.
Very true, the only ones advocating bans very close to fascist tactics are the far left Telford trade unions, but no suprise there.
Well said, David. I find it pathetic that the Shropshire Star deems it necessary to keep trying to upset people by its attitude. Why put this in the first paragraph “despite a Home Office ban preventing them from marching through the town” as though a law were being broken?
We live in a Country of (near) free speech, so everyone has a right to voice their opinion – however much we may not like it. We should take pride in that fact.
Hopefully, all people involved will remain peaceful, showing Theresa May MP and Telford and Wrekin Council that their censorship of legitimate opinions was unnecessary.

No more than 2 seconds after a small group of the EDL got off a coach on my front door step all carrying carry-outs of lager 1 leaned into the passenger window of a black slow passing BMW and tried to pull out the driver or passenger! Just how much is the police operation costing us??? Let alone the cost to the local businesses.
The EDL say they are a peaceful protesters – shame on them, as soon as the riots occurred last weekend any peaceful organisation would have immediately cancelled their protests.

Just went to show that the EDL, regardless of the fascist attempts to silence them, and ban the march, proved without a shadow of any doubt, the EDL are peaceful in their protests… win win for the EDL…

It Amazes me that no matter how extreme the views of the EDL, or Extremist Muslims they have overwhelming discontent to those that rioted around the country and ruined the lives of the innocent.
In no way shape or form condoning EDL views but i do respect the statement from Kevin Carrol on:
brave man who lost his son and two of his friends who were run over by some murdering scumbags. He lost them in the most horrific circumstances. It’s a tragic, terrible incident and our hearts go out to their families. Whatever our beliefs, that man has lost his son. It’s absolutely horrific. He lost his son and he still called for calm. Tariq Jahan didn’t call people ‘murdering scumbags’, dan.
In fact Mr Jahan didn’t blame anybody for his son’s killing (read the transcript).
‘I don’t blame the Government, I don’t blame the police, I don’t blame anybody.’
He finished his moving and incredibly powerful speech with these words;
‘Tensions are already high in the area. It’s already bad enough what we are seeing on the streets without other people taking the law into their hands.
My family want time to grieve for our son. People should let the law deal with this.
Today we stand here to plead with all the youth to remain calm, for our communities to stand united.
As we stand here today, this is not a race issue. The family have received messages of sympathy and support from all parts of society. All faiths, all colours, all backgrounds.
Please respect the memory of our son, our families and our loved ones by staying away from trouble, by not going out tonight.
I lost my son. Blacks, Asians, Whites -we all live in the same community. Why do we have to kill one another?
Why are we doing this? Step forward if you want to lose your sons.
Otherwise calm down -and go home.
Please.’
I hope Tariq Jahan’s message of inter-racial unity and community solidarity remains after this appalling week of riots, and that the EDL’s divisive message is defiantly rejected.

Theresa May hasn’t censored their opinions, they’ve been allowed to hold a static demo.

Not one single local councillor, MP, union leader, teacher or social worker has commented on the reasons why the EDL came to Telford in the first place.

We look forward to having a Peace Garden in Wellington quite soon. We hope all peaceful groups and people will join in making it. Today Wellington proved it is a peaceful town.
The EDL are not a Racist or Violent gruop. They are a Peaceful group set up to fight for Englih rights. Like you have groups for Asian rights and black rights. But as soon as English people fight for our rights were branded as Racists. The only trouble was from a small minority of Telford yobs with no connection to the EDL. The EDL wanted to show that the despicable things happening to our under age girls will not be tollerated. How they didn’t smash Wellington up i dont know. Shows what a peaceful group they are
Report abuse
Fighting for English rights, are you sure about that? Count the number of Israel flags at these EDL marches. Even the Shropshire Star picture has a man waving a British flag and wearing an Israel flag. I would never claim to be fighting for English rights whilst waving a flag of a foreign country, regardless of who it is.
Gavin Tarr, You are correct in what you say,But if you stick up for your country unfortunately you are branded a racist. Wake up you people before it is too late, you are giving your country away.

This is is a group whose views I find utterly loathsome but I’m (just about) inclined to agree that, in a free society, they’re entitled to their opinions and shouldn’t be banned from public expression.
Only 300-350 of them, though? That’s a bit pathetic and might (here’s hoping) suggest they don’t have the level of public support they think they do.
James, the march was banned by the fascists… numbers would have been massively swelled if this wasnt the case… and in fact, the police held over 200 at the services on the M54… now that is vile, fascism.
You bandy the word fascist around so much it’s meaningless.
As for the numbers, I’d have thought the ban would have redoubled their determination to make themselves heard.
As for being stopped on the M54, might that not have been because there was intelligence that some of those people had previous convictions or banning orders or that there was intelligence that they were planning trouble? Only asking.

My sympathy is with all the traders in Wellington who have lost at least £100,000 of trade on a prime shopping day. Can I urge everyone to get down to Wellington town centre this week to support the local shops by shopping local!!

I thought drinking in the streets was banned.
Why does anyone need alcohol in the middle of the day if involved in making a political statement?
If you want to make a point peaceably and argue your views you need a clear head.
Would you like to treated at A&E by someone who had been drinking? Would you like important decisions at meetings to be made by people drinking alcohol?
If you are at home or in a pub or restaurant socialising, relaxing whatever then drinking is a nice recreational activity but if you are wanting to be taken seriously as someone with something useful or important to say you do not need booze.

I personally think one of the biggest disgraces of the day is that due to this EDL protest (and counter protest) Telford United had to postpone their first home match of the new season with Luton Town. Spurs are the only other club in the country who postponed their match today for very obvious reasons. Purely because of the decision of 300 fascists to hold a rally, possibly up to 3000 football fans (in total from both clubs) missed out on the excitement of the start of the new football season and Telford’s return to the Blue Square Premier League. The Police may not have the power to stop the EDL from ‘protesting’ but they could easily have forced a change of date. Surely the local football club comes first over a bunch of fascists who were mainly bussed into Telford from other parts of the country. What a sorry embarrassment.
Is this a joke? If it is I’m sorry I missed it!
No it’s not a joke. Why the bloody hell should Telford Utd have to postpone their match because of an EDL ‘protest’. If you don’t believe me, then look up the reason why it the match was postponed. – Safety reasons – due to the latest incarnation of the National Front decided to visit Wellington. What a disgrace. Maybe you think it’s a joke that I’m annoyed about it, but why should local football supporters have to give up their football for a bunch of idiots from outside of the area?
Dead right Andy – and I’d add a couple more points :
1. If the match had gone ahead, and 46 of the expected 2,500+ crowd had been arrested, would the Shropshire Star have had a headline reading ‘football match passes peacefully’? Somehow, I suspect not.
2. I’m amazed no’one has made the point that the march was almost certainly organised deliberately to clash with the football – given that Telford were due to play Luton and the EDL originate from Luton.
AFC Telford are one of the best things to have happened to this area since reforming – they are a community club in every sense of that term – and it’s sad that their day was ruined by people intent on causing nothing but ill.
One of the greatest things about our country is that there is free speech. Unfortunately, too often media bias skews this free speech and we get a one-side view depending on the reporter or the political affiliation of the particular ‘media’.
I avoided Wellington on Saturday, and any other district centre for fear that something would kick off that I didn’t want to be part of or witness. I could kick myself for doing so now because I failed to support Telford, the place where I live. As Andy Taylor says above, the demonstrations have caused inconvenience, disappointment and significant financial cost to the Borough.
As far as I’m concerned neither the EDL nor the counter protesters who travelled here were welcome. If you support either side, and live in the borough, fine.
Given the situation, I do think it was a poor show that Morrisons (or any other shop in the area) continued to sell alcohol that afternoon. But I guess it’s difficult to draw the line. Should we have perhaps have stopped the wool shop from selling knitting needles incase one was used as a weapon? (Of course not)
The Shropshire Star reports that three police officers received injuries and 46 people were arrested, so I don’t think it’s right to say that the day passed off peacefully. I’d be interested to know whether these were local people or not.
Andy, you need to get your head out of the sand. This march – which was pretty pathetic really – should not have been so widely publicized and it should have been allowed to go ahead. The police could have contained both it and any spin off trouble, and that would have been that. Instead, those who accuse the EDL of intolerance revealed their own intolerance and hypocrisy by stridently demanding that the march be banned and creating a great fuss which put the fear of God into people and went viral, which could have attracted far more unsavoury characters from the extreme left and right to the Wellington beano. Both sides have subsequently declared success and attempted to claim the moral highground, but the fact is that secrets sympathies for the EDL were given a boost. A great swathe of the community – and by that I mean our Borough as much as our country – feels, no matter whether it be rational or not, that it is as much under threat as the red squirrel. It doesn’t speak of it openly for fear of name calling and finger pointing, but the undercurrent is there all the same and to deny it isn’t is just crass. What happened in Wellington provided that section of society with further proof of discrimination. So, the event was a success for no-one. On the contrary, it was an unmitigated strategic failure. You can howl with outrage at such an assertion and deny it until the cows come home, but if that’s the case, then there are none so blind as will not see and I would suggest that the truth hurts.
This march was known about over a month ago, the Council should’ve applied for the ban then and not do it at the 11th hour when they had either arrived or already in transit.

I’ve no doubt you thought long and hard before summarising your thoughts in such a succinct manner. You’re probably quite pleased with yourself and no doubt proud at the result ‘edl = scum’, give yourself a round of applause.

I think you could reasonably take the view that the last two weeks rioting events over the country influenced the 11th hour decision JohnH.
As for Cameron’s concept that the country has lost it’s moral ethos I think the Bankers greed and MPs expenses fraud told us that a while ago.
It should’ve been the previous history of the EDL that should’ve caused the ban to called for, by your reckoning, had the riots not happened, this bunch would’ve marched through the town wrecking the place.
that the language used by the counter protest group sounds exactly like the sort of thing they are complaining about.
eg.
Leo Fisher, Telford Unions’ deputy branch secretary, tells the counter-demonstation: “We want to send out the message that the EDL do not speak for Telford or represent Telford. Our message is we do not want them here and we do not want them spreading their racist, fascist poison.”
Humour me, I am no racist, in fact, Im not ‘ist’ about anything, just a normal, reasonable human being…but ‘we do not want them here’???

This is the mosr accurate description of the whole debarcle i have seen, well done Village. What I find scary is that if the banners and flags were removed from the photos, you could quite easily mistake the “peaceful march” with the “EDL march” as the later has many families and children on and the former shows a group of early twenties men
Report abuse
Just a couple of observations. I noticed in one pic that the Wolverhampton EDL were in Wellington and on their flag was the current Wolves emblem. As a Wolves fan myself, I’m disgusted to see the club official emblem on an EDL flag. More importantly the club, I hope, shall take a legal approach to have the emblem removed or make sure that banner is not shown in public as use of the emblem without permission is a breach of copyright law.
Secondly, I see in the above pic that a young lad is wrapped in an Isreal flag. Quite what that has to do with ending extreme Islamic faith in the UK, I’m not sure. The lad could of course just support Isreal against the Palestinians, but surely that’s another argument for another day. However, worryingly, it is known that the EDL have links with Ulster and Scottish Loyalists and it is these people that have recently taken to supporting the Isreali cause, with Irish Republicans and socialists supporting the Palestinians. So, could it be that the EDL is a front for extreme loyalism and zionism too?
dont be a clown… I am a wolves fan and have no issue with it… If wolves supporters wish to support and march with the EDL, then what on earth has it got to do with you?
