Emergency crews called out to River Severn in Shrewsbury
Saturday 13th August 2011, 11:23AM BST.
Emergency services were called to Shrewsbury today after reports of a person in difficulty in the River Severn. They were called out just before 5am.
The police helicopter, fire and ambulance crews and specialist rescue teams were sent out after a member of the public reported a possible sighting of someone distressed in the water.
Emergency services were joined by the Severn Area Rescue Association at the scene near Victoria Avenue.
A search was carried out on both sides of the river.
A spokesman for Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service said: “There was a search on both sides of the water but we were unable to locate any casualties.”
A fire engine from Shrew- sbury, a rescue tender, a boat support tender and a crew from Baschurch attended.
One onlooker said: “There were police cars at the Pengwern Boat house. There was also a police helicopter circling around and it was coming in low down to the river.
“There were two police cars and a search and rescue boat. Severn Area Rescue people were in a boat . They had their kit on and were looking close into the water.
“They didn’t pull anyone out of the water.”
A spokesman from West Mercia Police said: “Police were deployed to the Victoria Avenue area of Shrewsbury close to the River Severn before 5am.” A West Midlands Ambulance service spokesman said the incident was ongoing.

How many more river related incidents will it take for the council to wake up and address this serious problem?

Yes, there are hardly any life belts and no ladders should you fall into the river.
