Three badly hurt in Shrewsbury A5 crash
Friday 12th August 2011, 11:49AM BST.
Three people were badly hurt in a five-car pile-up which brought a main road through Shropshire to a halt today.
One person with serious injuries was airlifted to hospital and two others were put on spinal boards and taken to hospital by ambulance following the crash on the A5 at the Emstrey Island on the outskirts of Shrewsbury.
Emergency services also treated a number of walking wounded at the scene.
The A5 was closed in both directions with police saying it would be “some time” before it reopened.
Eye witnesses at the scene described how up to five cars were involved in the crash, with one coming to rest on its side next to the central reservation barrier.
One motorist caught up in the chaos described the scene as one of “carnage”.
He said: “At least four if not five cars were involved and it looked extremely nasty. It was carnage. One car was on its side next to the barrier, while the others looked in a bad way.
“There was a whole army of emergency services there – the air ambulance, a number of land ambulances, police and fire crews. The whole road has been closed and is at a standstill. It looks a very nasty crash indeed.”
Police spokesman Richard Ewels said: “Numerous vehicles were involved and the road is closed in both directions.”
John Hawker, West Midlands Ambulance Service spokesman, said: “We received a call to a multi-car collision on the A5 at the Emstrey Island, Shrewsbury at 11.45am.”
Mr Hawker said that all the casualties had been moved away from the scene of the crash.
