Fuel hits new record of 149p

Petrol and diesel prices in Shropshire today varied by more than 13p a litre as supermarkets triggered a fresh price war in the cut-throat battle for trade.

The cheapest unleaded fuel in the county stood at less than £1.32, while some forecourts are charging nearly £1.46. There is a similar discrepancy in diesel prices, which vary from just below £1.37, to almost £1.50.

The news, which places fresh pressure on the dwindling number of rural filling stations across Shropshire, comes as money saving expert Martin Lewis offered tips on how drivers could save over £500 on their annual car fuel bills.

“For many Shropshire households, putting fuel in the tank has become one of their biggest bills, costing thousands of pounds a year – up there with mortgage or rent, and gas and electricity,” he said.

This morning, supermarkets including Asda in Shrewsbury were showing the lowest fuel prices, with a litre of unleaded at 132.7p, and diesel at 136.7p.

But the Shell station at the M54 Welcome Break service station near Shifnal was charging 145.9p for unleaded, and 149.9p for diesel.

Mr Lewis, who runs financial advice website money savingexpert.com said there were five key ways Shropshire drivers could cut bills on “must-do journeys”, in-cluding eliminating “agg-ressive stops and starts” at junctions, and shopping around for top fuel deals.

The larger than usual discrepancy in fuel prices across Shropshire is being driven by supermarkets.

The biggest price drops this week have come from Asda and Morrisons, which both reduced the price of unleaded by 2p a litre and diesel by a penny. Tesco cut 1p off a litre of unleaded, and is offering customers who sign up for its credit card before September £5 off their next fuel purchase, when spending at least £20.

Paul Watters, a spokesman for the AA, said: “The price of oil has dropped, but this has not properly filtered through the customer yet. The supermarkets will lead the pack with price cuts, and smaller petrol stations will have to follow suit.”

I wonder how many of the town centre shop owners are filling up at the supermarkets, instead of supporting their local filling stations, and paying the extra 12p per litre?

The intelligent ones? Why pour more money into a fat cats pocket just because you can afford to pay extra?

So E, are you saying that Asda etc. are NOT fat cats?
The point is. these shop owners complain because people use the cheaper supermarkets instead of their dearer shops.
Now it suits them, they join the queue. A case of do as I say, not as I do.
        Hypocrits.

I read a bbc article about the global stocks and shares crisis which said that because of the crisis, the price of a barrel of crude oil had gone down by 10%.

Doesn’t matter, once it’s hits the £1.50 mark the oil companies won’t reduce it to below a £1.00 ever regardless of how much per barrel it comes down because there’s no way of making them reduce the price, they’re enjoying bankrupting this country and no one can stop them

Yup, it costs £80 to fill my tank. Fortunately the old beastie does 60 plus to the gallon. The pretty one does 30 on a good day. It’s 18 years old and has only 50k on the clock. That tells a tale about fuel prices.

Unfortunately, fuel is a good taxable commodity and something most of us cannot do without. All the vendors know this and know that there will always be a steady stream of customers however much we protest. Driving nowadays seems to be more of a chore than a pleasure and the constant hikes in fuel prices does not help.

Having just bought a tankful of petrol at Tesco’s (Wellington Retail Park) and paid £1.309 per litre, no way will I pay 15p a lltre more in order to support anyone. Petrol is petrol is petrol and the cheapest price will get my business.

Thank the tax man for the crazy high prices not the oil company.

Here in Arizona we are paying $3.50 per US gallon which equates to about £0.60 per litre courtesy of there being a limited amount of tax on fuel.

Interesting the picture is of a Shell station – right now they need all the money they can get to clean-up the North Sea!
