Combermere Abbey draft
Friday 12th August 2011, 11:29AM BST.
A badly damaged historic estate on the Shropshire border is to undergo a £2 million restoration.
Owners of the Grade I-listed Combermere Abbey near Whitchurch say the north wing of the building has deteriorated over the last 50 years which has threatened the centre of the house.
The damage, which has included the interiors of the north wing to collapse inwards and large portions of the exterior walls to fall away, means the wing is now on English Heritage’s ‘At Risk’ register.
To provide funds to save the north wing estate bosses have proposed an enabling development scheme – a government policy where planning consent can be obtained for projects which allows a sum of money to go to the restoration of a listed property.
