Shropshire conman got cash with dead child lie
Thursday 11th August 2011, 3:35PM BST.
A Shropshire conman tricked dozens of businesses into parting with cash by telling bosses that he was taking part in a charity run organised in memory of his dead child, a court has heard.
Owen Fox Roswell, also known as Nicholas Slocombe, targeted shops in Ellesmere, Oswestry and Leominster with the scam.
Shrewsbury Magistrates Court heard he told business owners and staff he was taking part in a charity run to raise cash for a childhood leukaemia charity close to his heart following the death of his child.
Some of the people he conned were told he had lost his son, while others heard his daughter had died.
Prosecutor Kate Price said that he had gone even further on one occasion when he visited Nicholas Craddock Estate Agents in Leominster.
“This time, he said it was six-year-old twins with leukaemia,” she said.
The 28-year-old admitted 28 fraud charges at court yesterday and was reman-ded in custody to be sentenced at Shrewsbury Crown Court.
