Bravery awards for two Shropshire soldiers
Thursday 11th August 2011, 10:56AM BST.
Two Shropshire soldiers are to be rewarded for outstanding acts of bravery with a prestigious and rare civilian honour, it was announced today.
Warrant Officer Class 2 Kim Hughes and Corporal Ricky Furgusson, both from Telford, are to be presented with the Captain Webb Medal at Shrewsbury Flower Show.
In August 2009 Mr Hughes, 31, then a Staff Sergeant, of the Royal Logistic Corps, cleared a minefield to enable the rescue of four soldiers.
While serving in Afghanistan with the 4th Battalion The Rifles, Mr Furgusson, 26, repeatedly ignored his own safety to rescue blast-injured colleagues on four separate occasions.
In January last year he stepped on an IED hidden in a doorway losing both legs and suffering severe facial injuries.
