Telford traders prepare for EDL march

Wednesday 10th August 2011, 9:31AM BST.

Nearly 30 traders in Telford today announced plans to shut shops and board up windows ahead of the English Defence League march on Saturday.

Business bosses in Oakengates attended a summit this morning to formulate an action plan.

It comes after a car dealer in Wellington said that he was clearing more than £400,000 of vehicles from the forecourt over fears the march could lead to rioting.

Peter Morris, of Peter Morris Cars, Wrekin Drive, said the dealership would be closed for the weekend.

He added: “We don’t anticipate any problems on the day, but we don’t want to take a chance either.”

Oakengates town mayor Steve Wood said: “This community is drawing together to protect ourselves. We will not let them smash up our town.”

Shop keepers and volunteers will gather on Friday to cover windows and barricade doors.

Elsewhere, AFC Telford United chairman Lee Carter today insisted the club’s match against Luton Town on Saturday was still on despite the march.
