Bid to tackle Shropshire under-age drinkers

Under-age drinkers caught with alcohol in Shropshire have been threatened with a knock on the door at home by police. The scheme is being piloted in Shrewsbury, Oswestry and Ludlow.

It comes after police revealed that 28 under-age youngsters were caught in possession of alcohol across the county during July, with children as young as 12 seen drinking in public areas.

Constable Scott Smither said the pilot was already showing signs of success and could be rolled out across the whole of Shropshire.

“It’s surprising to see how many parents have no idea they are breaking the law by supplying their own kids with alcohol,” he added.

The law on the age at which you can drink alcohol is complicated. Before the age of 18, you are not allowed to buy alcohol in pubs or shops, drink alcohol in pubs or outside in public places. It is also unlawful for anyone else to buy alcohol for you if you are under 18 and the drink will be (consumed in a pub or public place).
However, if you’re aged 16 or 17, you are allowed to drink wine, beer, or cider (but not other alcohol) with a meal in a restaurant, hotel or part of a pub set apart for eating meals. You can only do this if someone aged 18 or over is with you at the meal and buys the alcohol they can also drink in their own home.If people as in france etc taught teenagers to drink responsibly then perhaps we would not have a problem with binge drinking etc.

I see the logic but being familiar with the situation in Germany and Austria – where 16 year olds are able to purchase beer (and wine) – I’m not convinced this discourages a binge drinking culture.
