David Cameron today said rioters “must be defeated” as he recalled Parliament in the wake of the violence which has shattered Britain.
The Prime Minister pledged the number of police officers on the streets of London was to be almost trebled tonight to 16,000 as he cancelled all leave for the Metropolitan Police and drafted in help from other forces.
It comes as England’s prestigious football match against Holland at Wembley tomorrow night was cancelled amid security fears.
Speaking outside Downing Street after chairing a meeting of the Government’s emergency Cobra committee, Mr Cameron said: “People should be in no doubt that we will do everything necessary to restore order to Britain’s streets and to make them safe for the law-abiding.
“We will do everything necessary to strengthen and assist those police forces that are meeting the disorder.”
Warning young people involved, he added: “You will feel the full force of the law. And if you are old enough to commit these crimes, you are old enough to face the punishment.”
Last night rioting spread to the Midlands as Birmingham’s iconic Bullring and Mailbox shopping centres were looted.
