Force urges caution on Shropshire unrest rumours
Tuesday 9th August 2011, 11:30AM BST.
Police have advised people in Shropshire to take what they read on social networking sites with a pinch of salt after quashing rumours about overnight disorder in Telford.
West Mercia Police’s official Twitter feed issued a statement at about midnight last night, stating that the town had not been affected by similar problems.
“To confirm – we have no reports of any disorder in Telford or Wellington this evening. All just false internet rumours,” it said on the social networking site.
It followed this up by confirming there had been no reports of disorder across Herefordshire, Shropshire and Worcestershire during the evening.
Speaking today, force duty inspector Tanya Beckett said that as far as she was aware, no calls went into the police last night about potential trouble in Telford.
She said the West Mercia force was keeping an especially close eye on possible problems throughout the night due to the region’s proximity to the West Midlands.
“It was more just internet rumours – nothing happened. I know there was stuff posted on the internet. People were getting on the bandwagon,” she said.
Inspector Beckett urged people in Shropshire to be wary of what they read on social networking sites following some of the incorrect reports posted on there.
