Warning on Newtown ‘prowler’ car thefts

Monday 8th August 2011, 11:29AM BST.

Police today warned residents in Newtown not to leave cash or valuables in cars overnight after reports of a “prowler” breaking into vehicles.

Dyfed-Powys Police said a number of vehicles had been broken into and purses and wallets stolen.

Antony Topazio, force spokesman, said: “Residents are to be aware of a prowler in the Newtown area and ensure that their valuables are removed from their vehicles every night.

“Recently there has been a spate of incidents which have resulted in us appealing for everyone to take extra care in securing their homes and vehicles. For example, either late Thursday night or early Friday morning, someone broke into a car in Hendidly Close and stole a purse from the car.

“Then on either Saturday night or Sunday morning, a car parked in Garth Owen was broken into. The car window was smashed and a faux leather wallet stolen.”

He warned residents “to be aware of persons behaving suspiciously around parked vehicles at night, possibly with torches.”

Mr Topazio said there had been another incident, not necessarily linked, when a woman cycling in the Lon Derw, Trehafren area of the town was pushed off her blue Mongoose Program BMX bike. The attacker rode off on it.
