Wanted list fraud suspect is spotted in Shrewsbury
Monday 8th August 2011, 11:29AM BST.
A 28-year-old man named as one of the 10 most wanted suspected fraudsters in the UK was spotted in Shrewsbury at the weekend, police said today.
There have been several reported sightings of Nicholas Slocombe since he was included on the Crimestoppers “most wanted” list last week.
The charity announced all 10 suspects were thought to be jointly responsible for fraud totalling £200 million.
The most recent sighting of the suspect, who police said originally comes from Shrewsbury, was in Newent Close in the town at about 7.20am on Saturday. Officers attended an address but Slocombe had already left.
He is believed to be responsible for conning shops and businesses in Shropshire and Herefordshire out of money by posing as a charity worker.
Slocombe was arrested in April on suspicion of committing more than 30 offences across the two counties of fraud by making false representation.
He failed to answer his bail in May and a warrant was then issued for his arrest.
Detective Chief Inspector Alan Edwards, the head of Shropshire CID, thanked members of the public for their help, but said reports of further sightings would ensure the net closed on the suspect.
He said today: “We are extremely grateful to members of the public who have responded to our appeal for information concerning his whereabouts.
“I am confident Slocombe will be traced and arrested, it is only a matter of time.
“Information to assist our inquiries can be given in confidence by calling any main police station in the West Mercia force area on 0300 333 3000, or, alternatively, the Crimestoppers number, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.”
