The Shropshire Star has a new editor, following the departure of Sarah Jane Smith. Ms Smith had held the role for 10 years before leaving to pursue other interests.

After 32 years with parent firm the Midland News Association, she said: “It has been a privilege to work for the MNA in so many roles. I am delighted to wish the company every deserved success in the future.”

Mr Douglas Graham, chairman of the MNA’s parent company Claverley Group, said Sarah Jane had made a considerable contribution to the newspaper’s success and that the company wished her well.

The new editor is Keith Harrison who was formerly assistant editor of the paper in 2002, but has more recently been deputy editor of the Shropshire Star’s sister paper, the Wolverhampton-based Express & Star.

Mr Harrison, who took up his role today, said: “It’s great to be back in Shropshire. There’s a real community feel about the area and it’s a very busy news patch.

“These are challenging but exciting times for the whole Shropshire and Mid Wales region and, as well as reflecting readers’ lives on a daily basis, our aim is to give people in the area a strong voice, both locally and nationally.”

Father-of-two Mr Harrison, 43, added: “This has always been a pioneering area and our aim is to keep the Shropshire Star at the forefront of new technology to make sure our readers can access their news however they want it.

“We want to build on our strong connection with the readers and get as much feedback as possible to make sure we continue to provide a first class newspaper that the region can be proud of.”
